Food Sensitivity and Intolereance – Dr. Freedman in Eatontown New Jersey

Why Your “Healthy Diet” Is Not Working and You Don’t Feel Well

Medical professionals have found a link between inflammation and the havoc it can reap on your body thus resulting  in diseases.  Inflammation is the main culprit of ailments and illnesses such as obesity, migraines, digestive disorders, general fatigue, joint pain, skin disorders, arthritis, and ADD according to clinical studies.  Research shows that even healthy foods can cause cellular inflammation. If you eat a healthy diet and are experiencing any of the listed conditions above you may have a food sensitivity or intolerance.

What Is Food Intolerance?

Food intolerance is when your digestive system is unable to digest a particular food or process it properly. It is a natural response that originates from your gut. Many people are lactose intolerant which is a common type of food intolerance that is well known by the public. This intolerance affects one’s ability to properly digest milk sugar and is caused by a lack of enzymes.  A common illness caused from intolerances is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which causes symptoms such as bloating, heartburn, nausea, cramps, excessive gas, and diarrhea. Determining which foods the digestive system can’t tolerate can be tricky but it is possible to pinpoint them.

What Is Food Sensitivity?

How your immune system responds to foods, vitamins, and or environmental chemicals and substances can cause food sensitivity. Cellular inflammation and damage to your tissue can be caused by food that is identified as foreign or incompatible by your immune system. Your immune system will send a biochemical to get rid of it which is what causes the sensitivity. Water retention, depression, joint pain, car craving, weight gain, and fatigue are some of the early signs of food sensitivity which can develop into a chronic illness or something more serious.

Is There A Way To Identify My Food Intolerances Or Sensitivities?

There are a few options at everyone’s disposal to identify food intolerances or sensitivities. Cell Science Systems test, ALCAT, is one of the most advanced tests available to identify intolerances and sensitivities. It measures personalize nutrition at the cellular level through a simple blood test and is available at Dr. Freedman’s office in Eatontown New Jersey. Your cellular response to food coloring, chemicals, additives, foods and medicinal herbs are tested through your blood by Cell Science.  The results pinpoint sensitivities and intolerances that are caused by different substances in which Dr. Freedman compares to the baseline to your individual cellular response.  Healthy foods such as lean meats and fruits as well as simple painkillers like ibuprofen and vitamins can cause inflammation to someone’s cells.

You also may utilize the traditional method of food journaling where after each meal or snack you write down how your body reacts. This traditional method of testing can help pinpoint common foods that can be causing your symptoms but may be time consuming and will not pinpoint unlikely offenders. Recording what you consume on a day-to-day basis can help Dr. Eric Freedman create a plan for you to eat more food that your body wants and wean you off of the bad food. This method is not as precise as the ALCAT test but can help give insight some of the causes of your symptoms.  Hippocrates said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Today is the day, together we can take control of our health and vitality, and use our food to aid us in taking our life and health to the next level.

Does Insurance Cover This Test?

This test is covered by some insurance plans but only if it is medically necessary and you have a written referral from your doctor. We will do the initial verification of benefits for you and let you know what, if any, your out of pocket responsibility is and if you are subject to any out of network deductible. Many of our patients do experience not only a relief of their symptoms but weight loss as well. However most insurance plans will not cover this test if it is intended for weight loss only.

Included with your test, you will also have a full nutrition consultation with a customized meal plan designed around your results to include the foods you tolerate well coupled with the foods you like.
